Home =

*happy exhausted sigh*

I am back. Been back for several hours actually, reading mostly. I had the most awesome short holiday where I met the cutest, friendliest colt ever who I desperately wanted to bring home, long with an incredibly pretty little filly and a very young, very, very cute pinto colt. All their dam's and the other mares in the herds along with the other youngsters I met were also of the cute and awesome type, but those three babes totally caught my heart.

Cute tiny pinto colt being cute!
Very pretty little filly
Friendliest colt ever! I wanted to bring him home badly!
I make no apologies at all for sharing these totally non book related pics cause, well, my horse obsession beats my book one.

But on a book note, my holiday was also awesome cause I manged to fit in a lot of reading time. I'm hoping to at least partially catch up on reviews tomorrow (brain is fried tonight) but here's a quick run down. While away I read:

The Better Part of Darkness by Kelly Gay. Well, finished it as I'd already started it. Very good read.
Wake by Lisa McMann. Awesome. Have to order the others, Fade and Gone, like, now!
How To Ruin a Summer Vacation by Simone Elkeles. Good, funny, but took a long time for me to like the protagonist!
Evernight by Claudia Gray. Actually only started this one, am about 100 pages in and really loving it so far!

When I got home it was to find my Kindle had finally (it was meant to arrive last Friday....), arrived. Downloaded a few books for it, discovered Return to Paradise by Simone Elkeles, the sequel to the very, very awesome Leaving Paradise, was available for it and spent my afternoon/evening reading it. Not a let down in any way!! Also came home to find The Duff by Kody Keplinger and Unraveled by Gena Showalter waiting for me, so I'll be getting in to them shortly as well!

So Behind!!

Ack. I'm behind with about 4 or 5 books waiting to be reviewed, the adult recs page hasn't gone up like it was meant to last week and still needs some major editing, the 'currently reading' on the sidebar is about 5 books behind (maybe more, I'm losing track) and I'm about to be swamped with new releases! (like, 6 of them tomorrow/Wednesday) Apologies for the quite, I've been pretty sick the past couple weeks (for those who don't know, I have CFS/ME *look here for what that is* and bad weeks totally screw up any plans). I've been lucky enough to be well enough to read, but by the time I'm done, my brain is scrambled and I can't string words together very well for reviews. You're lucky I got the Waking the Witch one up the day I read it.

So, I'm taking care of myself this week, no yard and horses for me *sadness* and I'm hoping it means I can get caught up on the reviews and still add ones for the mass load of great books that are released this week. I apologise in advance if it doesn't happen...

Very cool new Vampire Academy news released the other day. It's being turned in to a graphic novel as well!! First edition will be out next year sometime, no date yet, cover is on Richelle Mead's blog here. I kinda love it, very excited!

Lack of New Reviews

Just a quick post to apologise for the lack of reviews right now. Have been drugged up to my eyeballs with painkillers since Sunday lunchtime because of a flair up of a old back injury. Being this drugged up means no reading, which means no reviews. And while I'm hoping I can come off the heavy duty stuff tomorrow*, it'll probably still be a few days before I can actually finish another book and write a cohearant review.

'Tis really annoying me how much this back pain is screwing with my reading plans for this month. Also, I'm missing being lost in other worlds :( Thanks to my dad though it's not been totally hellish, he's 'leant' (I stole) his 'The Unit' dvds and have been watching them pretty much non stop. I finished season 3 today (started s1 last Fri evening) and he then ordered me the final season, which will arrive tomorrow. If you've not seen it, it's a really, really great show!! Now I can't hold myself upright any longer cause it's too painful, so I'm off.

*have been saying 'should be off the heavy stuff tomorrow' since Sunday...

This and That

So I owe a review for First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost, which I read a week ago, but I've yet to get round to writing. Apologies for that, I will try and get to it in the tonight or tomorrow. Other than that...it'll be a week or so at least before anything else gets reviewed, for the simple fact that I'm not reading much new stuff right now. I'm reading A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray (thanks to a certain Pride Mod who is awesome!) and really, really loving it. I'm not big on historical stuff normally, but this is really great!! But it takes a lot of concentration for me to read, and that's something that tires me quickly, so it's slower reading than anything else.

Around that, I'm rereading the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead ahead of the 5th book, Succubus Shadows, being released next month. I may write reviews for them, I may not. Will depend if I can be bothered lol. I will say if you've not read them, you really should! They're a great read with some fantastic humor thrown in. I'd forgotten just how good they are in fact!

One thing I am MEGA excited about is that Richelle Mead, who is one of my most favourite authors, is doing a couple signings in the UK this week. Me and two of my best friends are going to one of them on Thursday and I'm beyond excited about it! I can't really believe I'm going to get the chance to actually meet her! The trip though, is a couple hours one way, so add it all together and it's going to be a very, very long day for me and I'm going to be really ill afterwards for several days. I'm pretty sure it'll be totally worth it though! I've promised several people to take pics, so I may try and do a mini recap of it here, for ease, but it won't be until Saturday at least in all likely hood as Friday I will be curled up in bed in pain watching various DVDs.

And that's the end of my rambling hyper enduced post, to your relief I'm sure. Apologies again for the lack of reviews.

I am hopeless

I keep meaning to review The High Lord and Graceling and not. I will try and get to them soon though. I'm nearly done with Fang, the new Maximum Ride book, so I'll owe a review on that soon too. But the great thing? Shift by Rachel Vincent, one of my 'most wanted' books this year, is in the post early!! UK release date is stated as 19th Feb, but (assuming nothing goes wrong) it'll be in my hands tomorrow!!

I am ridiculously excited about this! And I promise to post a (spoiler free) review of it once it's finished. No waiting, I will ignore the other lax reviews, and review Shift cause hey, how could I not? lol

Makes a nice change for a book to be out in the UK well before the US too. I like that I can tease my US friends that I know what happens in it before them. But I also know it's going to be tough keeping my mouth shut too for so long! Thank goodness for my RL friend who loves the series almost as much as me!

Apparently Having a Bad Night...

Apologies for once more intruding on reviews with my mess of a life, but I'm going to post this link anyways seeing as it's for my other blog. I just started it.

Basically, I'm having a crap night. A bad night with M.E. is...well, go read this, it might show you what it's like, or maybe just a glimpse. Life with a chronic illness is...pretty hard to describe, but this is just some of what I deal with.

http://life-with-m-e.blogspot.com/

If I have a separate blog to rant about life with M.E., then I'll keep it off here, so this is better and you guys won't get any more of my going on about being ill. Yay! *snort*

Going shopping for lots of books this week. Or in theory. May have to just order them.

Either way, will have 'Frostbitten' by Kelley Armstrong in the next few days and will have a review for that at least up this week. Maybe some others too, but we'll see.

Sunday, 6 September 2009

This has become...

...an unintentional habit. For which I apologise and ask you to bear with me.

Anyone who's followed this blog for a little while will realise I've put barely any reviews up of late which is odd. And if you've followed it longer than that (or just read older posts) you'll know I suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (or M.E. as it's also known). Basically what happened is about a month ago I relapsed pretty badly. I get exhausted doing far less then I was before (and even then I couldn't do much) and I'm having to deal with a lot of headaches and brain fog again.

That makes it hard for me to sit and read for hours at a time and to write reviews as well. So in the last month, I've not read much at all. Or I've been rereading snippets of favourite books instead of new ones. So instead of me reading two or three books a week, I've read about 3 in 3 weeks. All it means for the blog is that for the time being, there will be fewer reviews coming. I'll get past this bad point or at least relearn how to keep going while this ill, and the pace will pick up again. I'm not abandoning the blog by any means, just can't put the energy in to reading or writing as I need right now.

Oh, and yeah, layout change. Been meaning to change things for a while, still not totally happy with it but it'll do for now.

Update over :)

This is what my boredom brings you...

...a 1,400+ word post on the merits of Vampire Academy vs. Twilight. Apologies. I'll get back to reviews now ;)

Vampire Academy vs. Twilight

Summery
Vampire Academy: Rose is a 17 year old dhampir training to be a guardian to her best friend Lissa, a mortal vampire, a Moroi princess. The biggest threat they face are the immortal vampires, the Strigoi who hunt the Moroi and would love to turn or kill as many of the Moroi as they can. Rose's mentor is Dimitri Belikov and he's training her to be the very best she can be. And they're falling in love. In a world where a dhampirs soul job is to defend the Moroi they shouldn't be together, even if he wasn't her teacher and 7 years older.

Twilight: Bella is a human 17 year old who moves back to small town Forks to live with her dad after her mom remarries. There she meets the Cullen's and becomes obsessed with Edward. But the Cullen family are different, they're almost too beautiful to look at and keep completely to themselves. They're vampires. But that doesn't stop Bella going after Edward. Her best friend, Jacob Black, does his best to stop the relationship though. He's a werewolf and natural enemy to the vampires. He'd like nothing more than to take Edward apart and the feeling is mutual.

The Story
Vampire Academy is a full and well rounded story. It looks at friendship, and how it changes between two people who've known each other forever as they grow up and become adults. Love, both the 'I'd die for you' kind and the relationships that are more suited to friendship. Questioning the things you've always believed in as it's what you've always been told, and figuring out for yourself that life is not all that you thought. And it asks too big questions of Rose constantly: How far would she go to protect the ones she loves. And, how to choose between the two people she loves most when they both need her.

Twilight is almost solely a love story, with a little extra danger thrown in. Bella will do anything to be with Edward including turning her back on her friends, lying and running from her parents, basically ignoring all the people who want to keep her grounded in reality. She'll even give up her humanity to spend forever with him. Bella is wanted by vampires in Europe as well though, who are the law in the vampire world, creating the potential for serious conflict.

Characters
Rose Hathaway: Tough and independent she struggles to trust anyone. Aside from Dimitri and Lissa, she rarely lets people in. She's fiercely protective of Lissa and clearly cares deeply for her despite growing distance between them. She's fallen for her mentor, who's 7 years older than her. She knows they shouldn't be together however and does try to stay away from him. She can be bratty and impulsive and she tends to speak (or yell) before she thinks. But she has a much greater understanding of the world around her than most give her credit for. More so than some of the adults around her.

Bella Swan: She spends almost all of her time pining after Edward. If he's with her, she's upset she can't be closer to him, that he won't let her because she's 'too fragile', and if he's not with her, she wants to be with him. She cares about her best friend, Jacob, as well, but he's not enough for her to stop thinking about Edward. She can be impulsive, but where Rose knows there will be consequences when she acts suddenly, Bella doesn't and isn't prepared to deal with them. Her world revolves around Edward, she'll do anything to be with him and to protect him.

Dimitri Belikov: Strong, tall (really tall, like, 6' 7") and preferring to stay in his room and read when off duty, he's a very respected guardian, despite only being 24. He's completely dedicated to his duty, going against his training is like him going against nature. He may have feelings for Rose but he doesn't go soft on her. He's training her to be the very best she can be, to be one of the best guardians there are. And as much as he pushes her physically, he doesn't come close to pushing her romantically, in fact, he does what he can to avoid the relationship knowing it would be bad for both. But above all, he treats her with respect. Intense and deadly his temper can snap like Roses', but it's much better hidden and he can strike with the precision of a viper.

Edward Cullan: Equally obsessed with Bella. He takes to stalking her, breaking in to her room to watch her sleep at night (not cool - disturbing). He doesn't do much to encourage her to have a life besides him and his family. He may have a point wanting to marry her rather than turning her into a vampire, but with the stalking and other things, it falls flat. He may put up with Jacob for Bella, but he'd rather have her totally to himself.

Romantic Relationships
Vampire Academy: Rose and Dimitri may be forbidden, but it's not a reason for it. They fell for each other as they got to know each other. Learning that they had a lot in common, understood the other almost, if not better at times, then themselves, and on having a mutual respect for each other. It's a strong relationship, but it's not all consuming, they're still capable of being individuals.

Twilight: The majority of the story is about Bella and Edward. A love so consuming all other life fails to exist. Okay, there is a love triangle between Jacob, Bella and Edward as well, but it is very clear very early on that it's only ever going to be Edward, so it's a moot point. And the relationship between Bella and Edward isn't a healthy one, I'm not sure how people can say it is, because she turns her back on everyone and everything, including her own humanity for him, and he doesn't stop her. Not healthy.

Writing
The writing style in each book is very different. Ms. Mead gives her readers a clear and vivid image of the world and characters she's created. You can get to know characters quickly and easily and you're given good physical descriptions of them, with space to interpret for yourself. There is a great balance of darkness and grit, with a touch of humor to give some lighter moments. Ms. Meyer's work on the other hand is much more about Bella's feelings, rather than the physical nature of her experiences. There is little detailed description of the world around her or the people (with the exception of Edward) so you get a rough impression, but most of if you can make up yourself. Her tone isn't as strong and the words don't have the punch of Ms. Mead's as a result.

Vampire Lore
Twilight has little traditional vampire lore. They are supernaturally fast and strong, almost indestructible, but they're not affected by sunlight (apart from to sparkle of all things), a simple stake to the heart won't kill them and it takes a massive amount to destroy them. They do need blood to survive though and human food is a big no.

Vampire Academy however, has plenty of commonly found vampire lore, particularly with the Strigoi. They're immortal, supernaturally fast, strong, enhanced hearing and sight. They're evil and killers, hunting their prey alone or in groups. They're unable to enter holy buildings and daylight is a big no no. They can be killed with a silver stake to the heart or by decapitation. They, along with the Moroi and dhampir's, all have a basis in mythology and legend with Ms. Mead's own twists. But it's all much closer to that commonly found and recognized as vampire lore.

Overall opinion: Twilight is an okay series, but nothing more. The characters are pretty unbelievable at times and can get very annoying. Jacob was my sole reason for finishing the series and he seemed the best of the characters. Vampire Academy on the other hand has strong, but flawed characters, who are easy to relate to. The plot is strong and holds together very well making a great read. Twilight tends to drag on a bit, with Bella thinking of little but Edward. Would I buy another YA vampire series by Ms. Meyer? Unlikely. By Ms Mead? What's the quickest way to get it? Is yesterday too soon?

No review, though there should be

I had every intention of reviewing Destined For An Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost today. But I'm really struggling to write it. If I love a book, it's easy, if I hate a book, it's easy, when the book doesn't really hit me, it's harder. And that's my problem. I will review it, but it may be a little while.

I've been reading pretty slowly at the moment cause I've had other things to do and it's had to take a back seat. Will likely be like that for the next week or so, but I'll try and get a couple up soon.

I'm currently half way through Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells and I'm really, really enjoying it! I'll probably finish it tomorrow if I have time, so hopefully I'll get to reviewing it over the weekend.

Until then, apologies for the silence :)

No Review, kind of an update

Apologies for the lack of reviews. I've been not so well lately and not reading much as a result. Doing better now and picking books up again. Will try and get to reivews of Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr and Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs tomorrow, and hopefully some more by the end of the week. That's the theory anyway!

No Review...

Just a couple notes. One, there is a new Bitten By Books poll up, this one, sexiest character :) My personal favourite is nominated, Dimitri from the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, so of course I'd love to see him win, but who ever your fave is, go vote!

Two, I'm actually going to review said favourite series, because I realised I haven't yet. But it's very late here now (12.16am if you're interested) so it will probably be tomorrow that I do so. For the first book anyway, and then I'll review the others at some stage.

Three, went a bit nuts and bought 8 more books today and am already a 1/4 through the second of them, so there will be reviews up of the third and fourth Morganville Vampires books in the next couple of days as well, and they will shortly be followed by the fifth one, plus a couple Weather Wardens books, and Mercy Thompson ones. Plus the Jenna Black book I've mentioned previously, didn't get around to reading it over the weekend, and it's dropped down the TBR list because I've got new books in series I already know I love to read, but I promise it will come.

Promise that's all the random useless information for now too. Next post will hold a review ;)

That's Me Caught Up

Six reviews done in the past two days has me all caught up. I've forbidden myself to pick up another book today after finishing Moon Called yesterday. I'd read 6 books in as many days despite a hectic weekend that means I'm still recovering now, and I need to give my brain a break. Next on my reading list is The Devil Inside by Jenna Black, but in all likely hood I'm going to re-read Vampire Academy before that as a bit of lighter relief. Having read it cover to cover twice and my favourite parts many more times, it's an easy read and to be honest, I want the familiarity of favourite characters for a few hours. It likely won't be more than a few days before I'm reviewing again, and I once again have a long 'to buy' list for next week, so I'll keep them coming. But for now my mind needs a rest. So what am I filling my time with? Writting. Ha. Give myself a headache with that instead!

New Books!

I finally went on my book shopping spree a week and a half ago and bought 9 books, came home, ordered 3 more online. This week, going to buy another 3. So I thought I'd make a note of what I've bought so you can see what reviews are to come as I make my way through the pile. I've already reviewed Ill Wind and Glass Houses by Rachel Caine, Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead and Embraced By Darkness by Keri Arthur, the rest that I bought on that spree that are going to be reviewed are:

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
Possession by Jennifer Armintrout
The Devil Inside by Jenna Black
Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells

I also bought Don't Look Twice by Andrew Gross but I'm not going to review it on here, a new copy of Marked by P.C. and Kristin Cast cause I had the US version and I'm OCD about books and wanted it to match the rest and I have the UK versions of the rest, and Eternal Lover which is an anthology and I probably won't review it.

The books on my 'must have' list for this week:
Untamed by P.C. and Kristin Cast
Hunted by P.C. and Kristin Cast
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead (new covers - UK version and I'm buying a new copy cause mine have been re-read to often and show it a little too much!!)

There's a (pretty good) chance I'll buy the next Morganville Vampires book too, and of course all of these are going to be reviewed.

No Review

No review today, but probably several in the coming few days. Basically, I ran out of books to read. Shocking. But never mind, going to buy masses tomorrow (the list stands at 18, I think, but can only afford a maximum of 10 - thank goodness for gift cards and birthday money or it would be half that). Since reading The Host I've read Beautiful Disaster by Kate Brian, but, quite frankly, it was dull and ridiculous and I can't be bothered to review it on here.

Great day though, finally picked up my new car!! A brand new Toyota Aygo Blue. It's gorgeous. I love it. My mom insisted it needed a name though. Everyone said that about my first car, that it needed a name, and I pretty much agreed, thinking I was the kind of person that would name a car, but I didn't. Just never cared, and right now, feel the same about this one. I get naming cars, and I think it's fine, but I actually just don't care when it comes to mine. If I wait, my sister will do the job for me anyway lol. Having a brand new car is awesome, and very scary, cause I don't want anything to happen to it, so much more than my old car (a 10 year old light blue Peugeot 206 if anyone's interested). Still, it's such a great little car :)

Current poll on BittenByBooks if for favourite paranormal series. My personal fave, Vampire Academy, missed out on nomination, so my (very close) second, Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews, got my vote. But if you're a paranormal fan, go check it out and vote!
